Quarterdeck WebCompass Personal Edition (TM) v1.02Beta
OVERVIEW
Thank you for using WebCompass Personal Edition.
WebCompass Personal Edition is a unique search tool that
you can use to find information on the World Wide Web.
By using multiple search engines (called a metasearch),
WebCompass retrieves a comprehensive list of documents on
topic queries of your choice. On demand, WebCompass generates
document summaries of these Web pages for your review.
Access to all of the information WebCompass finds is just
a mouse click away.
For information on how to use Quarterdeck WebCompass,
please refer to the on-line help.
INSTALLATION AND COMPATIBILITY NOTES
If you are using Windows NT, WebCompass requires version 3.51.
Quarterdeck WebCompass compatibility with browsers and Web servers:
Browsers:
- Quarterdeck QMosaic v2.0
- Netscape Navigator v2.0
- Internet Explorer v2.0
- WebSurfer (16bit) v4.2
- WebSurfer (32bit) v4.6
- NCSA v2.0
Servers:
- Quarterdeck WebServer v1.0
- Quarterdeck WebSTAR NT/95 v2.0
- WebSite v1.0c
TECHNICAL TIPS
Connecting to your Internet Service Provider before starting WebCompass could
eliminate certain problems such as WebServer not initializing.
If your browser doesn't support HTML tables, you can change TableSupport=Yes
in the [WebCompass Personal] section of QDECK.INI to TableSupport=No.
Recommendations for performance optimization under Windows 3.1x
- Use a permanent swap file of at least 10 MB.
- Enable 32-bit disk access (if possible).
- If the physical amount of memory is 8 MB or less, set the
size of the disk cache under Windows to 1 MB.
- If Windows' 32-bit File Access is enabled, reduce the size of the disk
cache or eliminate it under Windows. (You still need to keep the
appropriate disk cache size for DOS.
OUTSTANDING ISSUES
The following is a short list of the outstanding issues as of release.
If you are using Quarterdeck InternetSuite v2.0 or QMosaic v2.0 AND using
QWinsock as your dialer, please follow this procedure to update your
WINSOCK.DLL:
1. Locate QWinsock's WINSOCK.DLL. It is usually in one of two places:
- The WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory if QWinsock was installed as
the system Winsock.
- The QWINSOCK directory within the InternetSuite or the
QMosaic directory if QWinsock was installed IN ADDITION to
your system's Winsock.
2. Rename the WINSOCK.DLL that you found to WINSOCK.OLD
3. Copy WINSOCK.QDK from the WEBCOMPS subdirectory to WINSOCK.DLL
in the directory in which you found QWinsock in Step 1.
WebCompass does not run with LAN Workplace v4.12.
Spry dialer does not run properly with Win32s. See Spry Web site
for details. You can search the Spry Knowledge Database for "Win32s Conflicts".
http://support.spry.com/
Releases of the NetManage WebSurfer browser prior to v4.2 (16 bit)
and v4.6 (32 bit) lack necessary features and that makes them unusable with
WebCompass.
If the documents do not appear to be updating, reload the current page.
This is due to over-caching by some browsers.
Capturing gopher search engines fails. WebCompass Personal will only capture
http-based search engines.
The WebCompass page starts to load and then stops after displaying the first
image (Header image). This happens with some versions of Netscape. Hit Escape
and then reload the page.

WEBCOMPASS TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Symptom : Search engines do not respond.
Solution: 1. Increase the time out values at the bottom of the initial screen.
2. If WebCompass is being used on a network within a firewall, make
sure that the correct values are assigned to the ProxyHost and
ProxyPort entries in QDECK.INI located in the Windows directory.
If you are using Quarterdeck's Location Manager, make sure that
the proxy information is correct for the Connection you are using.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Symptom: A specific search resource is not responding at all.
Solution: In the "Resources" page, select the search engine that is not
responding, run Test to ensure that the search engine has been properly
captured.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Symptom: Initial searches using Trumpet Winsock returns error message search
failed.
Solution: Releoad the page or attempt to do another search.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Symptom: You get the following error message while using WebCompass:
"500 Server error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was
unable to complete your request."
Solution: There are several things to check if you have this problem.
First, try restarting Windows. If the problem persists, try increasing your
virtual memory setting to 20 MB.
If you have a long TEMP variable setting, change it to C:\TEMP (create the
directory first, then change the set TEMP setting in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file).
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Symptom: Images don't display in WebCompass.
Solution: There may be a problem with your system's host name.
If you are running WebCompass under Windows 95 or NT, be sure that you have
entered a host name in the TCP/IP setup. You can use either the system's host
name or "localhost".
If your provider assigns IP addresses dynamically, you should use "localhost"
as the host name in the TCP/IP setup.
See your system administrator or Internet service provider for more
information about your host name.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Symptom: Under Windows 95, Quarterdeck WebServer fails to initialize when
Microsoft TCP/IP is configured only for a dynamic IP dial-up access to the
Internet AND you are not currently connected to your Internet service provider.
Solution: Open the Windows Control Panel and select Network. Double-click on
the TCP/IP protocol. In the IP Address tab, select Specify an IP address,
and enter the address 127.0.0.1.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Symptom: When using WebCompass with certain versions of QMosaic, the cursor
cannot be placed in text input boxes.
Solution: Go to the HTML Viewer tab in QMosaic's Preferences and check the
"Wait for Images" check box.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Symptom: No graphics displayed on the Webcompass search page.
Solution: If you're using a proxy server, make sure your configuration of
browser's "no proxy" field is identical to your system's TCP/IP domain name.
If you're using Win 95, your domain name can be found at control panel/Network.
Under Configuration/TCP IP/Properties, DNS Configuration property page has the
domain name. For example, it should have "companyname.com". If you're using
Microsoft Internet Explorer under Internet Properties, Advanced property page
has the Bypass proxy on field. For example, it should have "companyname.com"
